Conservation Links

The links below are organizations that I believe are doing important work in the area of conservation. They are deserving of your support. These organizations are doing the hard work of research and conservation on the ground, day in and day out. The work of conservation could not be done without organizations like these, and their work could not be done without the support of people like you. Learn and share all you can from them, and please give generously to support them.

Mountain Gorillas

Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project (MGVP) - MGVP provides vital veterinary services in the field for mountain gorillas. They work in all three countries where mountain gorillas are found (Rwanda, Demcratic Republic of Congo and Uganda). Although not as well known as some of the other mountain gorilla research and conservation organizations, the importance of the work they do cannot be overstated.

Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (DFGFI) - The Karisoke Research Centre, a part of DFGFI has been conducting research on mountain gorillas in the Virunga Volcanoes for over 40 years. The information gained from the research conducted over those 40 years constitutes much of what is known about mountain gorillas in generall and in fact, about the gorilla genus as a whole. Research is a fundamental input to conservation planning and management. By supporting the Karisoke Research Center through DFGFI, you make a significant contribution to mountain gorilla conservation in general.

International Gorilla Conservation Program (IGCP) - IGCP (formerly the Mountain Gorilla Project), has a focus on mountain gorilla conservation in all three countries where mountain gorillas are found. They work in partnership with other conservation and research organizations as well as each countries protected area authories (national parks departments). They have played a key role throughout the history of mountain gorilla conservation and continue to do so. Please support their important work.

Institute for Tropical Forest Conservation (ITFC) - Established in 1991, the ITFC is a conservation-oriented research institute of Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST). It is located on the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a World Heritage site in South West Uganda. Although they are an important player in mountain gorilla conservation for Bwindi, their work extends much deeper into the understanding and conservation of tropical forests.

Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (MPI-EVA) - MPI-EVA runs the research program for mountain gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda. In addition to the important work done at Bwindi, MPI-EVA also conducts research on western lowland gorillas in several countries in west Africa. This is another organization that is not as widely known as some of the other organizations in mountain gorilla research and conservation, however they are undoubtedly one of the most important. Dr. Martha Robbins is one of the Research Associates with the MPI-EVA, and one of the leading authorities on gorillas in the world. Look for her published work on gorillas anywhere you can find it!

African Wild Dogs

Botswana Predator Conservation Trust (formerly Botswana Wild Dog Research Project) - The BPCT supports the work of Dr. John "Tico" McNutt and Lesley Boggs McNutt. Tico and Lesley have been doing research on African Wild Dogs and conservation work in Botswana for over 20 years. The work of and supported by Tico and Lesley's organization has fundamentally changed the world's understanding of African Wild Dogs. They are well deserving of your support.
